"What is that large building in the distance in the old photo?"
"Dane-
This is actually the Greenfield Bridge leading from the point where Bigelow dies out into Greenfield Ave. At the time, Forward Ave continued roughly along the path of the Parkway East connect to "the Run" neighborhood area below Greenfield (which makes those houses way up in the woods on Saline in the Run seem a lot less odd since you used to be able to continue up Forward into Squirrel Hill!)
Map Here: http://images.library.... "
"Seems like a mistake. There is no bridge at Beechwood and Forward.
Anybody know what part of Beechwood Boulevard this is?"
"Why are all those buildings gone now?
I guess this picture was taken when Bigelow Blvd was still a pleasant place to be.
Here are some photos of the tunnel today:

"This was the original Kaufmann's building and clock. This was replaced by the current building. "
"Tagged the center of the plan area, Fifth and Cherry Way"
"Corner of 5th and Magee in Uptown.
Only could pick out the roofline of the "Gilbert Furniture" building in the current photo... "
"Now the Roberto Clemente Museum, and a winery... "
"This appears to be closer to the theater than the corner of Smithfield... but there is no corresponding curb cut on the right midblock...
Perhaps there wasan access alley behind the corner building at Smithfield and Fifth? "
"Can't get it exact, but this might be under the USX Tower. Chatham Street is at the bottom of this map here:

"Bob, thank you for finding this one. I've known about this picture for months and its location has been a mystery. "
"Hmmm...
Thrift Drug --> Eckerd 1997
Eckerd --> CVS 2005
Could this storefront be the same business, albeit in a different building for 60+ years?
Actually mildly impressive for downtown. "
"Sorry about the confusion Matt. That trips up a lot of people and I really need to do something about it soon. "
"the same site in 1937: a block-wide parking garage...

"Yes it is possible, in fact that's exactly where this was. I actually just tagged the exact same view in 1917 (the corner of Penn and Evans looking west), see here: http://retrographer.or...
for a link to a map. "
"Address of "The Clinton" is 417 Penn Ave looking toward the point. The building to the right is the Hotel Lincoln which is across Evans Alley from the Clinton. Evans ran between Stanwix and Fourth where Penn continued to the point prior to the construction of Gateway Center.
My methodology: Search "The Clinton" in City Directory, find 1918 listing for manager (Wm J. Schaffer)with home address of 415 Penn Ave,
http://digital.library...
Curse my luck for not having a business address, then realize manager may have lived on premises...
Check map, Wabash overpass and all buildings correspond. Viola...

"Ignore the first tag, I still can't tell the diference between I'm in the "tag it" page and the "tag it" link page that loses all of the mapping you've done... but I'm slow"
"They didn't do this building any favors when they renovated it..."
"Based on slope, this should be looking down the Celadine Steps TOWARD the 53rd steps, both of which ran in unopened rights of way of the respective streets...
Visible in 1924, these stairs were gone or altered by the 1939 edition Hopkins map"
