A view looking North to the East Street Bridge over what was known as "Butcher's Run." The bridge, which opened September 15, 1930, was built and owned by the City of Pittsburgh. Officially named the E. H. Swindell Bridge, the bridge is also know as the Essen Street, and most often the East Street Bridge for the East Street that also gave the valley below its name. The bridge is of an arched cantilever design with a deck about 225 feet above East Street. The bridge is about 1200 feet long with a main span of about 500 feet. Below the bridge today runs I-279, also known as "Parkway North."
