The retaining wall on Itin is built from stones from the old Western Pennsylvania Penitentiary, which was torn down in 1886. The retaining wall on Troy Hill Road is built from stones from the old Western Pennsylvania Penitentiary as well. The original Western Penitentiary was completed in 1825 and was built in the Allegheny Commons area. A plaque marking the site is in the eagle enclosure at the National Aviary. In 1882, a new prison was built along the Ohio River, where it remains.
