Indian Trail Steps

111894cp
A general view of the Duquesne Heights steps leading to Shaler Street, looking west. These steps led travelers from the South Side, near the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Station, to Mount Washington. The half-mile rise of steps climbing the treacherous side of the hill is presumed to trace an old Native American trail. These stairs ceased to exist in usable form by the late 1930s.
