The Massillon Sandstone Monument contained figures representing each service branch and was located on Monument Hill, formerly known as Seminary Hill, in West Park. The monument was built to honor the over 4,000 fallen soldiers of Allegheny County. The location was selected by a popular vote of the citizens of Allegheny County; its cornerstone was laid in 1870 and it was officially dedicated on May 20, 1871. The monument was torn down in 1929 and re-erected at Lake Elizabeth.
