View of Ross Street, from Fourth Avenue to 5th Avenue, in the Hump District. On the left is the Fourth Avenue Baptist Church, Pittsburgh Academy, and the Allegheny County Courthouse. On the left is the Allegheny County Jail. The Bridge of Sighs connects the courthouse and the jail. Designed by Henry Hobson Richardson, the buildings were built between 1883 and 1888. The term "Bridge of Sighs," was borrowed from the Doge's Palace in Venice and refers to the sighs prisoners gave as they passed from the courthouse to the jail.
