Mayor Pete Flaherty, pictured center. Pete Flaherty was born in 1924 on Pittsburgh's North Side and had a political career spanning 40 years. Flaherty was a three-time Democratic nominee for statewide office; Deputy U.S. Attorney General; a county commissioner for 12 years; and Pittsburgh's mayor from 1969 to 1977. His administration was committed to prudent spending and preparing austere budgets. During his tenure, Three Rivers Stadium opened, the Pirates won the World Series (1971), and the Steelers won two Super Bowls (1974-1975).
