View of the Market Square Commons area. Market Square became the commercial and civic center of Pittsburgh and was the largest of the city's three markets by 1800. It was home to Pittsburgh's first courthouse, jail, and newspaper -- the Pittsburgh Gazette, which was founded in 1786.
